Abu Dhabi in satellite dish crackdown

Abu Dhabi has become the latest emirate to crackdown on satellite dishes raising fears of increased costs for property owners, UAE daily The National reported on Monday.

Under the new rules, restrictions will be imposed prohibiting more than four dishes on a building, especially if they ‘disfigure the appearance of the city’, the report added.

The rule comes a week after the northern emirate of Sharjah announced a complete ban of satellite dishes in a bid to improve the overall appearance of the city.

In Dubai some communities have similar rules and have even banned washing being hung out on driers on balconies.

Many older buildings in the UAE capital have many satellite dishes and trailing cables. But newer buildings have a centralised satellite system that provides all occupants with television, the report explained.

“In the cases where there are many dishes, the management will be responsible for centralising the system, and that can be expensive,” said Nirmal Kumar, a sales manager for Vision Electronics, told the newspaper.

The report said there had been nothing reported on fines or penalties at this stage, but the municipality told the newspaper it would ‘not tolerate the existence of a potential threat to the health and safety of occupants and tenants, as well as property management staff and passers-by’.
